Types of Halloween

Post by OPTIDONN » Thu Jul 27, 2006 8:19 pm

I think that we need to come up with some semi-official classifications here. Like many holidays there are different themes that stem from cultural roots or personal taste. Halloween is no different. Maybe a few general classifications can help people understand by what is meant by a spooky Halloween or a Country Halloween.

1. CLASSIC HALLOWEEN- A classic halloween uses very simplistic decorations. Heavy use of black and orange. Heavy 50's type nostalgia. Use of typical decorations: black cat, pumkin, witch, ghost, bat. Some what retro.

2.COUNTRY HALLOWEEN- Heavy use of natural object: hay, apples, pumpkins, gourds, leaves. All senses are indulged! The smell of cinnamon, pumpkin pie. Taste: pumpkin pie, apple cider. Sight: various shades of orange, rust, browns. Hear the sound of rustling trees, feel the warmth of a fire.

3. GORE- Excessive use of blood and body parts. Scare the <deleted> out of as many as you can.

4.VICTORIAN/GOTHIC HALLOWEEN- A kind of dark elegance. Very dark romatic feel. Antiques used as decorations.

5. SPOOKY HALLOWEEN- Here we have the toughest to describe. The spookiness is entirely mental. An empty room can create chills. A spooky Halloween is best described as the constant irrational feeling that there is something either with you, something wrong or the feeling that there is something going on around you that you are unaware of.

WOW! I have way too much time on my hands! Of course these are only my thoughts and I know that the list needs to be added to, edited and refined.

Hmmmm I have studied your classification list and I seem to fall mostly into catagory number 4 since my house is decorated in this style year round, I do find however that I also belong to catagory number 5 and in some instances I have cherished pieces from catagory number 1, I must add here that catagory number 2 is very nice though I do not do much of that kind of decorating in favor of the other numbers...except of course for number 3 because I am not into gore.. (takes a deep breath) Oh my god I have MHPD multiple halloween personality disorder

I think I am a bit of everything. I was into more gore as a kid, now I just like everything that goes with Halloween.

I am sooo glad someone brought this up! & I have to say I've thought about it too.I'd say I've gone through mainly classic/gorey Halloweens,& 1 0r 2 country Halloweens, the optimal Halloween has got a combination of eveything, the element of scarey, fun, sweet, childish,&classic. You just gotta love all the pieces & parts of it.

One that wasn't mentioned..60's halloween...think the dripping letters on the Munsters, the Rat Fink t shirts and stuff, the Aurora models of funny/spooky monsters...the first wave of Japanese monsters (again with a line of Aurora models) the Universal monsters original five on t.v. (Frank, Bride of Frank, Drac, Wolf, Goon) Addams Family, the D.C. comics parody series where ghouls would chase after Bob Hope (huh??) MAD, Just about every t.v. market with it's own horror host, Hammer and American Intenational Horror, the cool airbrushed decroations your teacher had, K Gordon Murray Mexican horror flicks, Don Knotts and his GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN, and Classics Illustrated comics, with Frankenstien's monster strangling the doc's wife and BLOOD coming out between his fingers from her neck..VERY cool...

Well I think all the catagories listed are equally impressive and have a nice feel to a home. My family and I had our first Halloween in our first home last year. Before that I had to carefully place my decorations in apartments we lived in but last year I had a ball decorating my beloved home. We Have two small children 11 & 4 I have a bit of different styles troughout my house. Almost mini themes depending on the room a person is in. Witches always in the kitchen, Spiders and bats in the bathroom and on and on... I have the classic style decoration but can resist some of the other decorations (serving plater with severed head, walking hand I named Gurdy) mixed into my home. My children and I made a black and orange chain with construction paper last year and zig zaged it across my hall. From ceiling to floor it has to be Halloween! I like things creepy but really enjoy the classic stuff too as it reminds me of my childhood....

my halloween is the perfect blend of country and spooky halloween. i live in town, but outside of it is all rural, so it's really easy to put a country feel into it. and i just really like spider webs, jack-o-lanters, and tomb stones
trick or treat

In a small apartment classic halloween is about all I can pull off (except maybe a little victorian). I have always really wanted a country Halloween but I don't see how I can make that happen where I live. I was thinking that this year it might be fun to have a masquerade or something but the space is still an issue.

actually small places work for masked parties pretty well..I've done a few..you get the punch bowl set up and the food and pile the people in, get their pics taken, pick a winner, give everybody the Polaroid pic and you have success..plus with a LOT of folks in ONE itty bitty room, it's a bit difficult to get around and figure out who eveybody IS...
