The Real Reason For The Season

Sometimes I wonder if we have not buried the real reason for the season with Santa's fable, Shopping and decorations?

I wonder that myself. Christmas is way overly commercialized these days. I love it, but I do think fables, shopping and whatnot have replaced it's true meaning.

I agree with most on that as so many think they have to buy all this expensive stuff and buy for everybody it seems to be about how much you can spend.As i do most of my shopping at dollar stores and goodwill shops as they have nice things and i do my own baking cookies and breads and pies which can be given as gifts.

Ask me what *I* think, and I'll tell you that there are TWO reasons for the season: Jesus and Santa.

I mention Santa and his reindeer and his sleigh, because; look at the merchandise in stores! How much of it is devoted to Jesus' birth? Little (say the manger or nativity scenes).

And when it comes to what falls under the Christmas song category; whenever I mention Jingle Bells, Let It Snow (x3), Winter Wonderland, etc.; (i.e. songs of that nature), my sister's like "Those aren't Christmas songs! Those are winter songs!"

Well, I'm not that religious but I have to agree that Christmas is supposed to be about the birth of Jesus. At least, that's why we celebrate it. Jesus is God's gift to the world.
We also celebrate because we give, and it shouldn't matter how much we spend because it's always the thought that counts. Even just a card is better than nothing.
As for Santa Claus, well...I actually have this little decoration that goes out every year and it has Santa Kneeling over baby Jesus. This shows that even Santa Claus submits to the authority of Jesus.

So what you guys are saying is that all the merchandise that focuses on Santa, his sleigh, his reindeer, snow, and snowmen, etc. is considered "commercialization"?

Christmas is over commercialised without a doubt and it's true meaning has certainly suffered a little as a result. But overall I think it remains an important time of year for most people. Maybe not everyone sees it as a time to celebrate Jesus' birth anymore yet Christmas is one of (arguably only) the few times of year that family and friends get together in the spirit of giving and togetherness. I can't see that changing anytime soon but its good that topics like this remind us to think about these things and not take them for granted.
