Rex B. Hamilton invites you to the 2007 Midwest Haunters Convention

July 11, 2007

Greetings, Fellow Haunters:

I look forward to meeting you all this coming weekend at the Midwest Haunters Convention (http://www.midwesthauntersconvention.com/home.html) in Columbus, Ohio. I’ll be there from Thursday evening until Sunday afternoon.

This year the show will take place at the Doubletree Inn in the city of Worthington, Ohio. For those of you who attended the 2005 edition of MHC, this hotel is very close to where you were two years ago. For everyone else, Worthington is directly north of Columbus. The exit on Interstate 270, the square-shaped freeway that encircles the city, talks loudly about route 23.

Due to long-term scheduling confilicts, the 2007 MHC was unable to rent the Columbus Hyatt/Columbus Convention Center. But a little bird landed on my windowsill not long ago and chirped at me that things might be different in 2008.

Producers Kathy Schieferstein, Neena Robinson Collins, Kelly Collins and Barry Schieferstein have laid out a ferocious agenda for those who choose to attend. If you want to take a bus tour on Thursday evening, seats are still available but you will not visit the Horror Hotel in Chatfield. That event is sold out. But you will be able to walk through the Haunted Hydro in Fremont and Ghostly Manor in Sandusky. I have worked at both shows, and I encourage you to experience them.

It is too bad that you won’t be able to visit the Horror Hotel. David and Laura Lady are world-renowned for their talents at sculpting, painting and applying hair to some of the best masks in existence. What they also pride themselves in is that they have one of the most comprehensive mask collections, period. If you can visit Horror Hotel when they are open to the public in October, you will see works of horror art you likely will never see again.

Besides welcoming all of you to our fair state, I have two important tasks to perform. The first is to teach a class about some of the bone-headed things that actors sometimes do, and never should. The start time is Sunday at 12:30 in the afternoon. Please feel free to tell me about some of the knuckleheaded boners you’ve seen your actors pull.

The second task is one that I am very much looking forward to. I have agreed to work with a Web site called The Haunted Report (http://www.hauntedreport.com/) and blog about the convention for their site. I’ve never blogged before. There is the possibility that I will have a digital camera at my disposal so that I can send you a few images along with my thoughts. Your reactions on my inaugural blogging attempts will be most appreciated.

In between all these events will be a Monster Make-upWar session late on Saturday afternoon, a complimentary Saturday breakfast paid for by the International Association of Haunted Attractions, a big fancy costume ball on Saturday night and plenty more. Just as in past years, admission to the vendor exhibits is free.

I missed out on making a reservation for the Friday night bus tour to ScareParts (one of the three animatronic manufacturers in Columbus), Costume Specialists (a better-than-average make-up/costume shop) and Gates of Terror haunted attraction, located just a few miles south of the city of Lancaster. From what I’ve seen on the MHC Web site, this tour is completely sold out.

I’ve visited all three businesses in years past and can tell you right now that your evening will be one to take photographs of. I worked a weekend at Gates of Terror last season and encourage those attending to ask owners Jim and Marlana Walls about the special design tweaks that went into the construction of their haunted barn. That building is a lovely site to scare the heck out of people.

What else could possibly happen this weekend? If you don’t keep your wits about you, you’ll miss so much else. I hope to pop in to many of the classes, sneak up on lots of vendors and interview as many contest winners as I can. This will be my first experience using a laptop computer and a wireless connection, so please wish me luck!

See you soon!

Very truly yours,

Rex B. Hamilton
