To bad we don't all live in Halloween Town

Post by mandy0221 » Wed Sep 20, 2006 3:08 pm

Wouldn't it just be exciting if we all lived in the same town....or even street? Then we could have the best parties, decorations and attract people from all over.

I was reading a website that said New York city has the biggest Halloween celebrations with an entire Halloween Parade that is brodcasted (I never knew that) and invites spectators to join in the parade march ...apparently Anoke Minnesota has a parade too and is widely known for their celebrations.

Almost every town I have ever lived in has a Halloween parade.

The thing that bums me out is now that my son is over at the middle school they don't have parties any more.

I loved going to the school and seeing all the kids dressed up. I think at 13 it is a bummer that they don't get to have any fun anymore? That stinks.

When I was in school ,we were allowed to have parties in the cafeteria at lunch for whatever reason, you might just want to have a party...and everyone from your lunch table would bring something in...like chips or pop...but they don't let kids do that any more.

Every year when I send the invitations out for our Halloween party (I invite my son's entire class)...a parent always calls me and says is it a birthday party...because people don't ever have parties any more.

I just say...we like Halloween.

I know what you mean though Mandy...it would be so awesome to have a group of people close by that you could do everything as a group and help each other out, and compare decorations and ideas with. I would love that.

I am new to this board, but since people post their locations...it looks like everyone is spread out all over the place.

When I was on a different message board....I met so many great people...but they were all in different states...or even other countries, and I thought geez....it's like the internet services billions of people all over the world...how weird is it that you find a place like this that anyone can access...but when you think of how many people are out there that like Halloween...it is weird that more people aren't here and that it is so random where they are from...like it seems like you get one person from each state.

We used to have a Halloween bonfire and costume contest for all age groups. Sadly, our city council decided it was a waste of money and quit doing it. It used to be so fun because after we'd go trick-or-treating, the whole town would gather at this big old park and that's where the contest and bonfire would be. I really miss the good ol days. :(

Yesterday I said to my sister..."you know that some places they have Halloween parades?" and she said, "oh, no...." She knows me too well. Maybe I'll have to start campaigning with the locals to start a parade....

There is nothing done here for Halloween "Nothing"! What has always bugged me is that the city decorates the entire downtown core with lights and all for xmas, the least they couls do, is do the same at Halloween and put up lights, say Orange and Purple, you know what I mean. But you see, I live in the church capital of Canada I do believe it is. Honestly, Chilliwack held the Ginese Book of World Records for the most churches per population or something like that. Although I don't know if we still hold it, but I know we did for many years. Anyways, ya, so the stores all know they can't really get into decorating for halloween or they will get picketed, its so dumb! Last year I took hubby and went down to see about getting pictures done at Wal-Mart for that coming xmas, and being that I don't care for the xmas sence thing I wanted us to get them done at Halloween and give them for xmas gifts. Well, the Wal-Mart photo girl just chuckled and said, sorry we don't do any halloween backdrops, wouldn't go over well in this town and we'd never hear the end of it, and it would end up being bad for business. So, ya, nice eh!
But, times are changing :D This year we actually have our very first Goth/Punk/Alternative store, and I know they said they will be decorating, and there are a few new age store that have just opened up this year, and well, none of these would have lasted 1 month without vandalizem, threats, and picketing until they closed just a few years a go, so things are beginning to change and it looks as if people are becoming more open-minded, so the future here is looking better :D
I think if a town could do up their own little spooky town theme at Halloween, that would be sooooo cool! and a parade, man that would be just awesome!

We didnt have a halloween parade in our last town. However, here atleast the elementary school doe sit up right. The kids go home at lunch time and then return in costume. Thats alot of fun for me because they walk by the house and see me and the gang setting up. better than a teaser trailer. They also used to do a community haunt at the athletic club but I didnt hear about it last year. Were looking to move this year and hopefully the new town does something.

Yes, there was a similar thread and I posted some of my recollections of Halloween in the 1970's, here in Los Angeles. Hey, when I was going to school, on Halloween all the kids would arrive in costume for that day. And it was normal. There were usually at least 10 or 15 Draculas each Halloween! But yeah, EVERYONE would be in costume including the teachers, can you believe that??

Punch and cookies were served at some point, so it was mainly a loose day, more or less a party day. Not much was accomplished besides having fun. Once we bobbed for apples, and I'll never forget that strange experience!

Typically the morning would begin with roll call, we would get out some books and study some lessons for a while, and then the whole school, easily two or three hundred kids, would assemble outside in little troupes. We were then led by our teachers in a parade around the neighborhood. A Halloween parade. Out the front of the school, down the hill and down the street a ways, then back up the hill and back into the school.

It was pretty good! And I remember doing this several times.

As a side note, there was generally a part of the day when we sang from schoolbooks...all the teachers knew how to play the piano, it seemed, and they would accompany us. And there was that song "Halloween," that went "Tonight is the night when dead leaves fly, like witches on switches across the sky..." And in the songbook, which I would like to find a copy of one day, on the page for that song was a most atmospheric and evocative illustration showing dark clouds overhead, vaguely collected into the smoky form of a man...with a pumpkin head and long arms with clawed hands! I wonder if anyone remembers this song book and that particular illustration!

Hi Slightlymad, Thats cool what you said about what the schools in your area do for the kids. Here, in regards to that, I don't know what they do, I imagine nothing, but I'm not sure as I don't have any human children, I only have 3 feline ones.
We do have quite a famous community attraction that has gained noteriety across Canada and the USA. It's called "The Reapers" Haunted Attraction which also includes "The Maze of Terror". the Morans who own it, started it to keep the kids in their part of town busy and out of trouble, you see we are a huge farming community, well a city now. But anyways, thats why they started it and they just kept growing and been going for aprox 10 plus years. The city supports it because the attraction raises food and money for the local food bank, so its well accepted. If you ever want to check them out their website is; http://www.reapers.ca
And I know that our local malls do a halloween thingy for the young kids for families who don't want to do or don't feel the door to door thing is safe anymore.
But I do wish our city would have a halloween parade and decorate town like they do for xmas, that would be so cool.
But the Reapers Haunted Attraction is really very good. the last time I went, I actually had to be given a code red and was escorted out by one of their security personal and my husband. I was so embarressed, me of all people. But once we got talking to their medical attendant, and they found out I had just had a Cardiac arrest and Massive MI "heart attack" 4 months earlier, they explained to me that was probably why I didn't handle it well that time. But they did let me go on to the Maze of Terror after a bit. We still joke about it since I never scare eaisly. They really were very good with me though, I don't remember much until I calmed down and the medic was still checking my blood pressure and giving me oxygen and some of my nytro spray, but hubby said that right from the second I was in trouble he said all of the "monsters" well actors and actresses all backed off and blended into the walls and the security came running in and they covered my head and they & my hubby put their arms around me and got me out. It's funny you know, because even a lot of the actors know me, and they later told me, they knew it was so out of character for me not to handle stuff like that, but I guess my ticker just wasn't up to the fun yet. I will go back one of these years though.

OH my gosh, that sounds so scary! You're braver than I am, I do not handle haunted houses well at all. I'm one of those people who will hold on to the stranger in front of them, rather than face it on my own.
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.
